Your First Facial: What to Expect
Many first-time patients feel nervous about scheduling their first facial because they don’t know what to expect. Some people think facials are more of a luxury than something beneficial for skin health. Others feel like their skin is “too far gone” to be helped by a facial at all.
But I’m here to tell you: whatever you’re battling, and whatever nerves you feel about your first facial, there’s an esthetician out there ready to welcome you in, help you feel comfortable, and guide you through the world of skincare.
And all of us here at Elevated by East are here to help welcome you in, answer your questions, and help you feel comfortable every step of the way.
The Consultation
Once you arrive for your appointment, everything starts with a consultation.
During the consultation, we ask questions to better understand your skin, your skincare background, and any medical history that may relate to facial treatments. You can trust that there’s no judgment if you don’t have a routine. And there’s also no judgment if you have a shelf full of products and a very involved routine. The world of skincare can feel overwhelming, and we’re here to help make it approachable, easier to understand, and tailored to you.
You can also trust that we won’t push you into a routine full of expensive products if you’re not ready for them — or if your skin simply doesn’t need them. At the same time, we’re always happy to recommend products that would truly benefit your skin. There should never be pressure to purchase anything, especially during a first visit.
It’s best to be honest during the consultation because it helps us create the safest and most effective treatment plan for you.
In the consultation, we typically:
Ask about your skin goals and concerns
Review your current skincare products
Discuss sensitivities or allergies and review your medical history
Ask about previous facials and procedures that you’ve had
Talk about lifestyle factors like sun exposure, acne triggers, dryness, and more
From there, we’ll recommend which treatments, facials, or skincare products may be the best fit for your skin. We also discuss realistic expectations and, most importantly, listen to your personal goals for both your skin and your overall experience.
The Facial
Hydrafacials are a great place to start for a first facial. A Hydrafacial deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin all in one treatment. It’s perfect before an event — or anytime your skin needs a refresh — thanks to the immediate glow many patients notice afterward.
Hydrafacials are approachable and have little to no downtime, meaning your skin will typically look great immediately after treatment. Most patients find them relaxing and not painful, and appointments usually take around 60 minutes.
If you have sensitive or reactive skin (skin that gets red easily), it’s possible you may experience a little flushing or pinkness afterward, but that usually subsides quickly. Hydrafacials are often referred to as giving a “red carpet glow” in our industry because the skin looks fresh, clean, and hydrated afterward.
One thing unique to Hydrafacial — and modern microdermabrasion treatments today — is that instead of manual extractions, Hydrafacial uses a spiral suction tip combined with liquid exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and clear congestion. It’s effective while being much gentler than many traditional facials or old-school microdermabrasion treatments.
It’s also generally more comfortable because congested pores are cleared using vacuum suction rather than squeezing. That means minimal redness, no post-facial marks, and a treatment that’s often well tolerated even by sensitive skin types.
A Hydrafacial typically consists of:
Cleansing
Skin analysis
Exfoliation
Extractions
Infusion of hydrating and brightening serums
Moisturizer and SPF application at the end
Lymphatic drainage and red light therapy are also included with the Platinum Hydrafacial.
The Afterglow
Patients can usually return to normal activities immediately afterward. However, it’s generally a good idea to avoid heavy sweating or exercise right after your first facial, as well as avoid retinol, AHA/BHA products, scrubs, and exfoliating masks for about 48 hours post-treatment. That can vary depending on the patient and the treatment performed, so aftercare instructions are always something you’ll discuss directly with your provider.
For a first-time facial, you shouldn’t expect anything overly aggressive. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to skincare.
What you can expect afterward is smoother texture, cleaner-feeling pores, and skin that feels more hydrated and balanced.
Congestion and texture often continue improving gradually over time, while concerns like acne and pigmentation usually require consistency. One facial can absolutely help, but a consistent routine is what creates long-lasting results.
And remember: every facial — no matter which treatment is performed — can be customized to your skin and your goals.
There’s always so much to explore in the world of skincare, so feel free to message us with any questions. We’re here to help and we hope to see you at Elevated soon!
